I love clay....and texture, pattern, color and experimenting with form.
Buxton Pottery first was conceived in the late 1980’s , and I found I was totally consumed by the processes and loved the art so much. But after having my children a change of direction saw the pottery take a back seat to other business ventures. I have spent the intervening years as a custom dressmaker and then morphing into an exclusive boutique selling unique occasion wear. After 30 years on the fashion path and covid bringing business to a halt, my passion was rekindled, and we have the reborn Buxton Pottery. I find making pottery a mesmerizing and relaxing endeavour, with so many ways to create something totally unique. Being a creative spirit, this is a perfect outlet and has brought many new learning opportunities with the exploration of new clays, forms, glaze combinations and ways to fire the pieces. I make mostly functional food-safe pieces. I throw, hand-build, combine the two, and alter. I love experimenting with forms and I love colour. Combining forms, colour and then putting homemade food into/onto my pieces – well – it’s a bit of heaven – the harmony that is created.
My latest venture has been into crystalline glazing on porcelain pots. Crystalline glazed pottery is technically and aesthetically the cutting edge of Ceramic Art. Nowhere else can you find such an intense combination of organic beauty mixed with scientific process. To make these requires the highest level of artistry in making fine porcelain pieces by hand but also mastering the chemistry of the materials so that the crystals naturally grow in the firing. It is a perilous process that takes a lot or care to achieve.
