The Story Behind Buxton Pottery
Buxton Pottery began in the late 1980s and returned to the wheel during the quieter days of COVID. What started as a love of clay has grown again into a small Melbourne studio producing functional pottery, crystalline pieces and one-of-a-kind ceramics for everyday use.
Handmade in Small Batches
Each piece is made individually or in small groups, allowing time for careful shaping, finishing and glazing. Natural variations in form and glaze are part of the process, giving every piece its own character while remaining practical for everyday use.
From Kiln to Finished Piece
Every firing is carefully planned, but the kiln always brings an element of surprise. Heat, glaze movement and atmosphere work together to create subtle variations in colour and surface, ensuring that no two pieces are ever exactly alike.
A Working Melbourne Studio
Buxton Pottery is made in a small, practical studio where each stage happens by hand—from throwing and trimming to glazing, firing and finishing. The studio may be busy and imperfect, but it is where every piece begins and where each collection develops over time.
