After the initial high-temperature firing, the kiln is held at precise temperatures to allow crystal growth within the glaze. The gold and ivory blooms form naturally and cannot be controlled or replicated exactly.

This handmade mini crystalline decorative vase is wheel-thrown and finished in a galaxy-style glaze—a soft semi-matte teal-green base scattered with dramatic crystal “planet” rings in smoky charcoal and steel tones. Crystalline firing is where the magic (and the science) happens. In the kiln, the glaze is taken to high temperature and then carefully cooled and held through specific stages so crystals can grow within the glaze surface. The size, placement, and “halo” edges of each crystal are influenced by the kiln atmosphere, timing, and heat-work—so every firing is unique, and every result is a beautiful surprise.

The crystalline finish is achieved through a complex firing process, where the kiln reaches 1300°C and then cools slowly, allowing crystals to grow, a process that can take up to 16 hours. The result is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece.
